There are four main types of HVAC systems for homes. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. These are the main HVAC systems you have to choose from. Central Furnace and Air Conditioner The most common HVAC system is a central furnace and air conditioner. The furnace is located inside your home while the main part of the air conditioner is located on a cement slab outside of the house. Conditioned air is delivered throughout your home through ductwork. The ducts are located in your attic, basement or crawlspace. Heat Pump A heat pump is often a more energy-efficient HVAC system than a furnace and air conditioner. A heat pump is located outside and can both heat and cool your home. Heat pumps don’t work well when temperatures are below freezing for a period of time. If you live in an area where it’s cold, they’re usually paired with a backup furnace. Since the furnace only operates when it’s very cold outside, it should have a long lifespan since it’s not used that often.
